What We Believe

As Episcopal Christians, our beliefs are expressed most clearly in what we do together in worship, study, fellowship, and service.  Our faith is founded upon the authorities of scripture, tradition, and reason.  Our Church is organized under the leadership of bishops who work in concert with priests, deacons, and laity.  In our Church, all people are commissioned and gifted for ministry at their baptism.

We are Trinitarian Christians whose life together is centered in our weekly remembrance of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ around the Lord's Table.  Among other names, we call this remembrance meal Holy Eucharist, a word that means thanksgiving.  At the Table, we offer to God a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as we commit ourselves to walk in the way of Jesus.

At each service of worship, we join our hearts and voices with Christians across the ages to say the words of the historic creeds of the church, allowing for a diversity of understanding, expression, and levels of belief in each part of the creeds.   You can read more about the general contours of our beliefs in the catechism in the Book of Common Prayer by following the links from this page.

In the Spirit of the grace that we have all experienced in Christ Jesus, we welcome everyone.  No exceptions.

We commit ourselves, individually and collectively, to our Baptismal Covenant:

The Baptismal Covenant

Leader: Do you believe in God the Father?
People:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.

Leader:  Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
    He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Leader:  Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
People:  I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy catholic Church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting.

Leader:  Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the
prayers?
People:  I will, with God's help.

Leader:  Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
People:  I will, with God's help.

Leader:  Will you proclaim by word and example the GoodNews of God in Christ?
People:  I will, with God's help.

Leader:  Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?
People:  I will, with God's help.

Leader:  Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human
being?
People:  I will, with God's help.
